All love involves some suffering. In Ranma's case, it' a not infrequent occurrence. The background to the situation depicted in this cel of Ranma sitting at the Tendo dinner table with a shiner and some bandages is Akane chasing Happosai and launching a soy sauce shaker at Happosai just as Nabiki walks through the door, staining the blouse Nabiki is wearing. Akane apologizes profusely, bowing repeatedly, but Nabiki brushes the whole incident off, saying it doesn't matter, it was Akane's blouse. In the next cut, we find Nabiki sitting on her bed offering Akane an item of clothing from Nabiki's closet. As Akane goes through Nabiki's closet, she finds that every piece of clothing in the closet belongs to her, not Nabiki. In one of those cases of extremely poor timing, Ranma picks the moment to knock on the door and enter, explaining that he used a towel to clean the dojo, thinking it was an old rag. Nabiki tells him to just throw it out. But Akane grabs it, exclaiming that it was her favorite towel. In reaction to Akane's anger, Ranma asks what's wrong, and, as they say, the rest is history.
I was quite please to finally recognize the location of this cel. I had passed by the scene more than once, not thinking that the purple halo around Ranma's eye could be on another cel layer that didn't come with the cel.
